Opaque Interface – Algorithmic Invisibility and Mythological Presence

As part of the IUNO Artistic Fellowship, HTW Berlin
This XR installation inverts the conventions of augmented reality: rather than seamlessly layering digital content onto the physical world, the interface responds to approach with withdrawal. Samsin Halmi — the Korean goddess of birth, life, and fate — appears as a fleeting digital presence in space. AI-generated image fragments drawn from an archive of algorithmic misrecognitions overlay reality as translucent, dissolving layers. As one approaches the figure, it fragments and withdraws from view; only distance permits a fragile, always incomplete coherence.
This interaction logic translates Édouard Glissant’s concept of the right to opacity into a spatial experience of resistance: visibility is not granted through proximity — it is exposed as a structure of power. The interface refuses the colonial gaze and asserts the fundamental inaccessibility of non-Western knowledge.

Diese XR-Installation kehrt die Konventionen der erweiterten Realität um: Statt digitale Inhalte nahtlos auf die physische Welt aufzuschichten, reagiert das Interface auf Annäherung mit Entzug. Samsin Halmi — die koreanische Göttin von Geburt, Leben und Schicksal — erscheint als flüchtige digitale Präsenz im Raum. KI-generierte Bildfragmente aus dem Archiv algorithmischer Fehlerzeugungen überlagern die Wirklichkeit als transluzente, sich auflösende Schichten. Nähert man sich der Figur, fragmentiert sie und entzieht sich dem Blick; nur Distanz erlaubt eine fragile, stets unvollständige Kohärenz.
Diese Interaktionslogik übersetzt Édouard Glissants Konzept eines „Rechts auf Opazität“ in eine räumliche Erfahrung von Widerstand: Sichtbarkeit wird nicht durch Nähe gewährt — sie wird als Machtstruktur entlarvt. Das Interface verweigert den kolonialen Blick und behauptet die fundamentale Unverfügbarkeit nicht-westlichen Wissens.
