When political power attempts to forcefully remove a physical monument, how can we make its memory unremovable?
In the workshop “Opaque Prompting as an Invocation – An Unremovable Monument for Ari” at ZK/U Berlin, we used AI not as a tool for perfect generation, but as a medium for a techno-shamanistic ritual.
Ari is the affectionately named Statue of Peace in Berlin—a memorial honoring the surivivors of military sexual slavery during WWII, which currently faces the threat of forced removal. We conjured her using "Opaque Prompts"—poetic metaphors of resistance and care drawn from the survivors' testimonies.
The machine was fed with our words to remember Ari, but repeatedly failed to materialize a clear image of her memory. The sanitized, Western algorithm could not process her unremovable presence. It failed.
Instead of mourning the machine’s failure, we celebrated it. In a system built on total visibility and control, the algorithm’s inability to capture her presence demonstrates that not all memories can be processed, flattened, or controlled by technology.
To conclude, we inscribed our invocations(prompts) onto a long white cotton cloth and performed “길가르기 Gil-gareugi" (Splitting the Path)—a traditional Korean shamanic ritual of tearing the fabric to release unresolved sorrow and open a clear path for the spirits to walk freely among us.
A bronze statue can be dragged away by a crane, but a monument built of glitches, fragmented text, and collective memory can not be dismantled.

정치적 권력에 의해 철거된 위안부 기념비의 기억을 물리적 형상이 철거되더라도 결코 사라지지 않는 형태로 보존할 수 있는지 사변적 상상을 위한 참여형 워크숍이자 퍼포먼스다. 생존자의 증언에서 도출한 시적 은유의 '불투명한 프롬프트'를 AI에 입력할 때, 서구 중심적 알고리즘이 비서구적 연대의 기억을 투명하게 규정하는 데 실패하는 현상을 마주한다.
이 워크숍은 참여자들과 함께 이 기술적 실패를 애도하는 대신 축하한다. 모든 대상을 투명하게 규정하고 통제하려는 동시대 기술 시스템 안에서, 알고리즘이 끝내 존재를 포획하지 못한 실패의 자리는 어떤 기억도 기술로 통제되거나 평탄화될 수 없음을 증명하는 저항의 공간이 된다. 기계에 주문을 위해 입력한 프롬프트를 긴 흰 면천 위에 펜으로 직접 쓴 뒤, 맺힌 한을 풀고 영혼이 자유롭게 거닐 수 있는 길을 열어주는 한국 전통 무속 의례인 '길가르기'를 수행하며 퍼포먼스를 마친다.
